Acts 4:32–35 They were of one heart and mind.

John 20:19–31 Eight days later Jesus came and stood in their midst.
The glory of the Resurrection permeates God’s word on this joyous day that continues our Easter celebration. No longer are the disciples confused and adrift, as they were when first seeing the empty tomb. In the first reading, we hear that the entire community of believers bears witness to the Resurrection by what they do and how they live. They treat each other with mercy and love, as Jesus did when he appeared to all the disciples, even Thomas, who had doubted. Let us join in praise, for God’s mercy endures forever.

| John 20:19-31 Friends, our magnificent Gospel today declares that there is no greater manifestation of the divine mercy than the forgiveness of sins. We are in the upper room with the disciples, those who had denied, betrayed, and abandoned their master. Jesus comes and stands in their midst. When they saw him, their fear must have intensified; undoubtedly, he was back for revenge. Instead, he speaks the simple word “Shalom,” peace. He shows them his hands and his side, lest they forget what the world (and they) did to him, but he does not follow up with blame or retribution—only a word of mercy. And then the extraordinary commission: “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Jesus’ mercy is communicated to his disciples, who in turn are sent to communicate it to the world. This is the foundation for the sacrament of Penance, which has existed in the Church from that moment to the present day as the privileged vehicle of the divine mercy. ~ Bishop Barron |

Protecting God’s Children
The Catholic Diocese of Spokane is committed to providing a safe environment for all children, young adults, and vulnerable adults in our care by cultivating a culture of awareness and vigilance. The work of ensuring the safety of those entrusted to our care is a challenging undertaking. Each year our children and young people participate in the VIRTUS education program, Empowering God’s Children, through which parents, teachers, catechists, and youth ministers give children and young people the tools they need to protect themselves from those who might harm them.
All clergy, all employees, and all volunteers who work with children and young adults participate in the VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children program and update their knowledge annually through online modules. These adults also read and sign our diocesan Code of Conduct and Commitment, Disclosure Statement, and have a criminal background check every five years. All clergy and employees receive Sexual Harassment training, and all clergy and volunteers who work in homebound ministries complete Vulnerable Adult training.
Diocese of Spokane parishes and ministries comply with all safe environment policies and procedures.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) audits our safe environment programs annually. Bishop Daly announced that the Diocese passed its 2020 audit; click here for audit results.
As of June 30, 2020, 7,555 children, youth, clergy, deacons, seminarians, teachers, staff, and volunteers have been educated and 2,710 clergy, deacons, seminarians, teachers, staff and volunteers have passed criminal background checks.
